Kazakh FM met with guests of Forum For a Nuclear Weapons Free World
At the meeting with IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano the Kazakh Foreign Minister told about Kazakhstan's steps in the international arena in the field of nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation, in particular, last initiatives of Astana made at the 66th session of the UN General Assembly in September, 2011.
Touching upon urgent problems in the sphere of nonproliferation, Y.Kazykhanov emphasized that Kazakhstan adheres to necessity of creation of more effective systems of nuclear safety and elaboration of common internationally recognized standards and criteria of safety of nuclear power facilities.
"We proceed from the fact that any large-scale nuclear accident can have serious cross-border consequences. And today it is necessary to improve mechanisms for crisis response to nuclear emergencies," the Kazakh Minister said.
There were also considered the issues of implementation of a number of large joint projects in Kazakhstan. In this connection the Minister noted that Kazakhstan is interested in expansion and deepening cooperation with the Agency on various directions, in particular, in the field of nuclear medicine.
Touching upon the IAEA initiative to convene a Forum to exchange experience in the creation of nuclear weapons free zones, especially for the Middle East states, Y.Kazykhanov expressed confidence that an example and experience of creation of such a zone in Central Asia will be useful in other regions of the world as well. Besides, Kazakhstan can share its experience on this issue in the context of our chairmanship in the OIC.
At the meeting with Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, head of the UN Regional Centre, Ambassador Miroslav Jenca there were discussed promising directions of cooperation between Kazakhstan and the UN, modern tendencies in the Central Asian region, including the current situation in Afghanistan, the issues regarding combating organized cross-border crime, terrorism and extremism. The prospects of improvement fight against distribution of drugs, solution water and energy tasks.
The topic of interaction was debated at the meeting with Director of OSCE Conflict Prevention Center Adam Koberatski. He noted significant role of our country in its activity, emphasizing successful chairmanship of Astana in this authoritative international organization.
The sides exchanged opinions on the issues of implementation of the decisions reached within the OSCE summit in Astana and the agenda of the upcoming annual meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs in Vilnius in the first decade of December.
