Kazakh FM held meetings with OIC foreign ministers in Djibouti

ASTANA. November 16. KAZINFORM Kazakh delegation led by the Kazakh Minister of Foreign Affairs Yerlan Idrissov took part in the 39th session of the Foreign Minister's Council of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) that kicked off on Thursday in Djibouti.

Speaking at the conference, the head of the Kazakh Foreign Ministry summarized the results of Kazakhstan's chairmanship of the OIC from June 28, 2011 to November 15, 2012. Y. Idrissov emphasized that "this important event in the history of the Kazakh diplomacy passed in the atmosphere of complex geopolitical and global economic challenges and dramatic political changes in the geography of the OIC."

The Foreign Minister Idrissov noted that Nursultan Nazarbayev's speech at the OIC 38th Foreign Minister's Council meeting on 28 June 2011 determined Kazakhstan's chairmanship agenda, where a special attention was paid to modernization of the Islamic world, competitiveness improvement, socioeconomic progress, strengthening of the OIC role in the international arena and inter-civilization dialogue development."

In addition, according to the Kazakh Foreign Minister, 40 events including 10 at the ministerial level were held under the Kazakhstan's chairmanship.  

In particular, such major events as the 7th World Islamic Economic Forum, the third Conference of the OIC Ministers of Health, the 5th meeting of OIC Ministers of Environment were held under the auspices of Kazakhstan.  USD 500 million of humanitarian aid to Somalia, which can be called the greatest success of the Organization, was raised during this period.

Astana initiated a number of steps to reconstruct the OIC and to strengthen its cooperation with the EU, OSCE, SCO, CICA and the Congress of World and Traditional Religions. Kazakhstan's initiatives in the field of nuclear non-proliferation and normalization of the situation in Afghanistan, development of G-Global initiative, as well as  interaction of the Organization with G-20 were supported by the Muslim community.

Speaking at the forum, OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Djiboutian President Ismael Omar Gelle, and foreign ministers of the OIC member states commended Kazakhstan's chairmanship of the OIC and noted the relevance of initiatives put forward by President Nursultan Nazarbayev affecting the major issues on the agenda of the Islamic Ummah.

According to them, Kazakhstan as the chair of the OIC proved to be a mature and responsible state, able to participate in the complex political processes, as well as being an example of effective state-building, economic development, preservation of interethnic and interreligious harmony. In particular, the Secretary General of the OIC, noting the high content and professionalism of Kazakhstan's chairmanship, stressed that it remained one of the most brilliant chapters in the history of the Organization.

Within the conference Y.Idrissov held a number of bilateral meetings with the heads of foreign ministries of Afghanistan, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Gambia, and Guinea. The sides discussed a wide range of issues related to international, regional and bilateral cooperation.
