The Kazakh Secretary of State noted the fact that the conference was devoted to 20th anniversary of the closing of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site, and it once again called upon the world to pay attention to the threat of existence of nuclear weapons. This is a very important step towards the implementation of new initiatives proposed in recent years by the leaders Nursultan Nazarbayev, Barack Obama, Dmitry Medvedev," Saudabayev said during the press conference.

According to him, in the year of the 20th anniversary of independence of Kazakhstan and the 20th anniversary of the closing of the Semipalatinsk test site Kazakhstan feels that the international community can deal with the nuclear threat only through joint efforts.

Foreign Minister of the Netherlands Uri Rosenthal noted that "the conference co-organized by Kazakhstan and the Netherlands is a symbol of the intense and close relations between the two countries, especially in such important issues as nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament."

He noted that at present a serious threat to the international community is posed by Iranian and North Korean nuclear programs. In this regard, Iran and North Korea need to earn international confidence, Rosenthal said.
