Kazakh Commissioner for Human Rights met with reps of “Amnesty International” organization

A.Shakirov briefed the AI representatives on the main directions of his work in the field of human rights protection, characterized the legal base, regulating the activity of the Kazakh Ombudsman. Special attention was paid to the issues, connected with realization of the Kazakh Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture, in particular, with the establishment of the National Preventive Mechanism, provided by the Protocol. The Ombudsman informed the interlocutors on establishment of interdepartmental working group on consideration of facts of torture and monitoring of rights observance of persons, staying at places of deprivation or restriction of freedom.

The sides discussed the issues, connected with the human rights observance in Kazakhstan within the preparation to the OSCE chairmanship in 2010 and measures on creation of conditions for functioning of the civil society.
