Japan's auto production slumps 30.9% in May

TOKYO. June 30. KAZINFORM Japan's auto production dropped 30.9 percent in May from a year earlier, marking the eighth straight month of decline as the March 11 twin disasters disrupted supply chains, Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) said Thursday. Kazinform refers to Xinhua.

The industry body noted however that the rate of decline slowed from the 60.1 percent plunge in April, one month after the magnitude-9.0 earthquake and massive tsunami pummeled the Pacific coast of northeast Honshu.

JAMA's report showed that passenger car production fell 32.5 percent to 410,971 units and truck output fell 18.7 percent to 74, 804 units.

Production of buses, meanwhile, plunged 52.3 percent to 3,948 units in the recording period.

By brand, the world's largest automaker Toyota Motor Corp's output dropped 54.4 percent in Japan to 107,437 and Honda Motor Co. declined 53.4 percent to 34,746 units, while Nissan Motor Co. gained 0.8 percent to 80,036 units. Kazinform cites Xinhua. See www.xinhuanet.com for full version
