"The escaped convict, who was armed with a gun, was killed after putting up armed resistance to his arrest," Tahir Normatov said, without giving the name of the escaped inmate.

The convict escaped from a jail in the Tajik capital of Dushanbe on August 23, along with 24 other inmates, including several Russian citizens.

The convicts attacked a duty officer during the night, took his keys and opened the cells of the other inmates. The escaped prisoners then seized weapons from the duty room and opened fire on the guards, killing five.

Currently seven of the escaped prisoners have been arrested and four have been killed by police.

The Tajik authorities asked Russia to help in the search operation for the escaped criminals.
