Israel simulates earthquake to test seismic sensors

JERUSALEM. August 26. KAZINFORM An earthquake of 3.0 on the Richter scale was simulated in southern Israel Wednesday to test and develop seismic sensors, local newspaper The Jerusalem Post reported; Kazinform cites Xinhua.
Scientists simulated the earthquake in Negev, using a controlled explosion of 80 tons of explosives, said the report.
Few can notice the effects of the earthquakes of that magnitude, although similar earthquakes occur in the region once a week averagely, Israeli National Infrastructures Ministry was cited as saying.
The simulation could test seismic and acoustic sensors in Israel as well as in some other areas around the Mediterranean basin. Scientists are expected to better study earthquakes and thus know how to calibrate sensors by monitoring the sound waves from the simulated earthquake; Kazinform refers to Xinhua.
