Local media report that the guard had security clearance to be at the Sager Palace in Stockholm and no crime was suspected.

Some reports said the man had taken his own life.

Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt and his family were not in the building at the time, a spokesperson said.

Few confirmed details are yet known.

The emergency services were called to the prime minister's residence at just after 13:00 (12:00 GMT).

The dead man had been found by a colleague who had just returned from lunch, the Aftonbladet newspaper reported.

"There are no signs of a crime," Towe Hagg, a police spokeswoman, told Reuters. "We investigate this as a suicide or a work-related accident."
