Ghimpu appointed Moldovan acting president
"The Constitutional Court will verify the appointment's constitutionality," Ghimpu said. Once that is done, Ghimpu will have the right to nominate a candidate for prime minister, and the latter will suggest the new government makeup and program.
The new president may be elected before or after the formation of the new government, within two months - until November 11.
Deputy Voronin did not attend the Friday meeting of the parliament. He told the media earlier in the day he would concentrate on parliamentary activity, strengthen his party and prepare for new election. Few doubt the possibility of the soonest parliamentary election.
Ghimpu was elected for speakership at the first meeting of the new Moldovan parliament despite the protests of the Party of Communists. He was a nominee of the new ruling coalition, the Alliance for European Integration, of the Liberal Party, the Liberal Democratic Party, the Democratic Party and the Alliance Our Moldova. The four parties gained 53 out of 101 parliament seats in the early election. The Party of Communists, which had been in office for eight years, gained 48 mandates. It is bound to become the opposition now; Kazinform cites Itar-Tass.
