EU urges Iran not to use force against peaceful demonstrators

BRUSSELS. February 15. KAZINFORM The European Union (EU) on Tuesday urged the Iranian authorities to refrain from the use of force against peaceful demonstrators. Kazinform refers to Xinhua.
The EU is "closely following the events taking place in Iran," a spokesperson of the EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said in a statement.
The EU has noticed "the apparent restrictions placed on the freedom of movement of certain members of the opposition and the protests taking place on the streets today," said the statement.
Ashton has called on the Iranian authorities to "fully respect and protect the rights of their citizens, including freedom of expression and the right to assemble peacefully," it said. kazinform cites Xinhua. See www.xinhuanet.com
