EU supports the project on prevention and control of the infectious diseases in Kazakhstan

ASTANA. February 18. KAZINFORM The European Union is funding a service project "Support to Capacity Development for the Ministry of Health to implement the State Programme on Health Care Reform and Development (starting 2010)". The sum is allocated from the Kazakhstan Action Programme 2007: Supporting reforms to the health sector with total budget of € 4 500, 000.

The project is aimed to improve infection disease prevention and control with special focus on Tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and hepatitis through upgrading the role and involvement nurses and improvement of infection prevention and control in health facilities, the press service of the EU Delegation to Kazakhstan said.

This project concentrates on disease control measures which are not sufficiently addressed by other funded projects. The project will primarily focus on (MDR) TB, HIV/AIDS and hepatitis C as these diseases represent the main public health threats. The project assures that best practices and evidence based measures are introduced. One essential element of this project is the establishment of sustainable institutional partnerships between relevant institutions in Kazakhstan and in the EU with the aim of transfer of knowledge, institution building and capacity development.

The project will ensure in collaboration with Sanitary Epidemiological Station (SES), Republican TB and AIDS Centres and other stakeholders that those health service providers having contacts with TB, HIV/AIDS and hepatitis B and C have an Медпункт Infectious Disease Control plan in place, containing administrative, environmental and personal protection measures to reduce TB transmission and minimise the risk of iatrogenic HIV and hepatitis B and C infection.

Overall objective of the project is the following: To improve infectious disease prevention and control with special focus on TB, HIV/AIDS and hepatitis B and C. Goal 1: upgrade the role and involvement of nurses in infectious disease prevention and control as to implement patient-centred approaches. Goal 2: to improve infection prevention and control in health facilities for both the providers and users of health services.

The project will be implemented by the European Network of Implementing Development Agencies EUNIDA in close co-operation of the Ministry of Health of Kazakhstan and SanEpid station.

The project's operational duration is 16 months. The EU has allocated € 998, 650 to finance this project.
