EU imposes sanctions on Iranians over arms deliveries to Syria
For the first time in the history of EU, sanctions against one of the countries affected high-ranking officials of another country: the "black list" for Syria includes three top officials of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, specifically Corps Commander Mohammad al-Jafari and his two assistants - Kasym Soleimani and Hussein Tayeb.
They are all accused of delivering to Syria "armaments and police equipment for the suppression of opposition demonstrations." For that reason from now on they are not allowed to enter the EU countries. Their assets in European banks will be frozen.
Bank assets of four Syrian companies, which are close to the administration of President Bashar al-Assad of Syria, were also frozen within the framework of the third block of the sanctions. Another four high-ranking Syrian officials were put on the "black list," which now includes 30 people. The Syrian President and his brother Maher are on the top of the list.
The EU sanctions were imposed because of repressions of the Syrian regime against the opposition, which claimed the lives of some 1,300 people, according to the information of the European countries.
