Melisa Ozgur, only 25, has already made a name for herself in the art world. Makhat emphasized how remarkable it is that Ozgur has been financially supporting herself through her art for the last five years.

“This is a great example for young artists, especially those from Kazakhstan, showing the thriving art culture in Istanbul, where Melisa is based. Istanbul is one of the cultural capitals of contemporary art, and we hope her journey can inspire others,” Makhat noted.

The exhibition came about with the support of the Turkish Embassy. Makhat highlighted that this was their second collaboration, with the Turkish ambassador’s wife taking an active interest in promoting Turkish art in Kazakhstan. “We first worked together on a project at Forte Space, and now we are bringing younger talents to the forefront,” she added.

Makhat has a clear vision for the impact of art in Kazakhstan. Since opening her gallery in 2021, her focus has been on engaging younger audiences, whom she sees as influencers capable of affecting their parents’ appreciation for art.

“We didn’t need to reshape the older generation’s mindset. It happened naturally, through their children’s influence.”

Speaking about Ozgur’s artistic themes, Makhat noted the meditative depth of her work, which often intertwines elements of nature, such as fish, and cosmic motifs. “Her art seeks inner reflection and harmony, blending decorative aspects reminiscent of Eastern traditions,” Makhat explained.

When asked about the broader goals of her gallery and exhibitions, Makhat stated her mission clearly: to change the culture of art consumption in Kazakhstan. “I want people to learn to see beauty, value it, and respect it.”
