Disregard for civilian lives ‘staggering,’ UN envoy says after Kandahar bombing

UNITED NATIONS. August 26. KAZINFORM  The top United Nations envoy to Afghanistan has spoken out against yesterday's suicide bomb attack in Kandahar city which killed at least 41 civilians and wounded over 80 others, saying the perpetrators have shown a "staggering" disregard for innocent lives.

The truck bomb exploded on Tuesday evening in a residential area of the city near a Japanese construction company, a guest house used by foreigners and government offices, according to media reports.

Kai Eide, the Secretary-General's Special Representative for Afghanistan, offered his deep condolences to all those who have suffered as a result of the attack, which comes just days after the country's presidential and provincial council elections.

"The disregard for civilian lives shown by the perpetrators of this attack is staggering," Mr. Eide said in a statement issued in Kabul today, Kazinform refers to the UN news service.
