Disarmament and arms control issues discussed in Washington

ASTANA. June 15. KAZINFORM A press conference devoted to the topical issues of disarmament and arms control was organized in Washington by the Kazakh Embassy together with the Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) of the Monterey Institute of International Studies, the Kazakh Foreign Ministry reports.

Representatives of Ministries and departments, in particular, the U.S. Department of State, expert community and diplomatic corpse took part in the conference. Outstanding American politicians Senator Richard Lugar and Nuclear Threat Initiative Co-Chairman Sam Nunn were among eminent guests.

Kazakh Ambassador Yerlan Idrisov welcomed the participants in his opening speech.

Former UN Under-Secretary General for Disarmament Affairs Jayantha Dhanapala chaired session where the main results of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty Review Conference held in New York recently were discussed.

Director of the CNS William Potter awarded R.Lugar and S.Nunn for achievements in nonproliferation of mass destruction weapons. In return the Senators emphasized the contribution of Kazakhstan to nuclear disarmament complimenting the role of President N.Nazarbayev in this process.
