CTBTO highly appraises Kazakhstan's contribution to nonproliferation process - Tibor Tóth

VIENNA. April 16. KAZINFORM /Timur Bekturganov/ Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) highly appraises Kazakhstan's contribution to the global disarmament and mass destruction weapons nonproliferation. The closure of the Semipalatinsk Test Site and voluntarily renunciation of nuclear weapons became very important milestones to nuclear-free world.

Tibor Tóth, the Executive Secretary of the Preparatory Commission of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization said it at the meeting with Kazakh Ambassador to Austria, Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the United Nations (Vienna) Yerzhan Kazykhanov yesterday in the capital of Austria.

Mr. Toth praised the participation of Kazakhstan President N. Nazarbayev in the Washington Nuclear Security Summit. "Due to its achievements in the sphere of nonproliferation Kazakhstan has a priority right to advocate for accelerating the signing and ratification of the Treaty", he stressed.

At the meeting the Kazakh diplomat handed a letter of Kazakh Secretary of State - Foreign Minister Kanat Saudabayev to T. Toth. In his letter K. Saudabayev draws attention to the resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly declaring August 29 as the International Day of Action against Nuclear Testing and calling the member states and international institutions of the UN system "properly celebrate this momentous event." As is known, it was Kazakhstan that initiated the development and adoption of the resolution.

The Executive Secretary expressed readiness to participate personally in the activities connected with the date of August 29. On behalf of the Preparatory Commission of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization he called on all states for taking practical measures to support the event.
