Coordinating Council of National Preventive Mechanism against Torture established in Kazakhstan

ASTANA. January 10. KAZINFORM - In accordance with the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan which established a National Preventive Mechanism against torture under the Ombudsman of Kazakhstan, its Coordinating Council has been elected, the press office of the Ombudsman for Human Rights in the Republic of Kazakhstan informs.

Key role in ensuring the work of the National Preventive Mechanism has been entrusted to the Commissioner for Human Rights conducting systematically monitoring the above mentioned government agencies.

In order to effectively coordinate the activities of members of the National Preventive Mechanism and their election, the law has established the Coordinating Council under the Commissioner for Human Rights elected by a special commission. The commission includes authoritative public figures and leaders of non-governmental organizations working in the field of human rights as well as representatives of the media and the legal community, prominent academics and MPs.

Today, during its first meeting chaired by the Ombudsman, the Commission has considered application s and formed the first Coordinating Council electing 19 members.
