Colombian Shakira, Pique welcome first child

The new parents named their newborn baby boy Milan Piqué Mebarak, who was born at 9:36 p.m. Tuesday in Barcelona, Spain, according to an announcement posted on Shakira's website. Mebarak is Shakira's seldom-used surname.

"The name Milan (pronounced MEE-lahn), means dear, loving and gracious in Slavic; in Ancient Roman, eager and laborious; and in Sanskrit, unification," it said.

Last week, Shakira posted a black-and-white photo on her website which showed that the 35-year-old singer in a bikini top standing besides her 25-year-old boyfriend, Kazinform cites Xinhuanet.

Pique now plays for Spain's FC Barcelona. "Just like his father, baby Milan became a member of FC Barcelona at birth," the announcement also said.

Shakira, who is also UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, now is helping to raise worldwide awareness of the survival issue of infants through an unusual method: an online baby shower hosted by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
