CIS states to update digital changelog of geographic names

MINSK. August 13. KAZINFORM The digital bulletin containing changes of geographical names in the Commonwealth of Independent States will be updated. Efforts to that effect will be discussed at a session of the CIS Interstate council for geodesy, cartography, cadaster, and remote sensing of the Earth in the national park Belovezhskaya Pushcha on 20-24 August, BelTA has learned.

The bulletin contains information about changes in names of geographical objects in Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Ukraine. The information it contains is represented as a list of alphabetical sequences of outdated names of the geographical objects in Russian. The digital bulletin was established in 2010.

At the session heads and specialists of national cartographic, geodesic, and cadastral services, research and higher education institutions of the Commonwealth of Independent States, representatives of the CIS Executive Committee will also discuss other matters. In particular, the matters will include the implementation of joint projects to set up the infrastructure for geospatial data of the CIS states, the formation of a common geonavigation space. The organization of training for representatives of cartographic and geodesic services of the CIS states in the career enhancement and retraining center under the Moscow State Geodesy and Cartography University will be high on the agenda, BelTA reports.

At present the Republic of Belarus presides over the CIS Interstate council for geodesy, cartography, cadaster, and remote sensing of the Earth. Chairman of the State Property Committee Georgy Kuznetsov is the head of the Council.

The Council is a CIS body established to enable cooperation in relevant fields. Primary goals of the Council is to fulfill the CIS agreement on cooperation in geodesy, cartography, cadaster, and remote sensing of the Earth, to determine and pursue an agreed policy in these areas, to develop and carry out interstate programs in this sphere, and to coordinate specialist training programs.
