CIS MPs focus on Anti-Nuclear initiatives of Kazakh President

ASTANA. November 29. KAZINFORM - St. Petersburg is hosting an international conference on "Nuclear safety in the modern world. The role of parliamentarians in the process of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation" organized by the Majilis of the Parliament of Kazakhstan and the Interparliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States.

Tauride Palace has gathered more than 500 foreign guests from more than 20 countries including MPs, heads of international organizations, recognized scientists and experts in the field of nuclear safety.

The Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev sent his greetings to participants and guests of the forum. Nurlan Nigmatulin, the Chairman Majilis, voiced the message from the President.

"Kazakhstan is one of the few countries in the world suffering from the effects of nuclear testing. About 500 nuclear explosions were made on our land. Radiation affected half a million people. Therefore, we have initiated the development under the auspices of the UN Universal Declaration of nuclear-free world offered the international project "ATOM" designed to boost public support for the idea of on nuclear weapon testing global ban and its total elimination. Kazakhstan's example is especially relevant today as it is time for decisive action to reverse the deadly arms race", the message reads.

The President also expressed confidence that the parliamentarians will become one of the driving forces for the global anti-nuclear movement.
