Evgeny Fedyakin, 32, was a former Russian national champion and had also reportedly won a Russian Cup event earlier this year, as well as a World Cup medal previously.

He was a passenger in a Toyota car that collided with a truck Monday near the Siberian town of Berdsk, where he had won the regional title at the weekend. The driver of the car was also killed.

"The tragedy happened on the next day after the Novosibirsk Region Cup, where Evgeny took first place," National Powerlifting Association vice-president Vitaly Dubrovin said.

Regional traffic police have said that the driver of the car in which Fedyakin died had been banned from driving, without specifying the reason.

The condition of the truck driver is unclear, although photographs from the scene in local media show that the truck received only minor damage.
