Britain announces more funds for Pakistan's relief
Mitchell's announcement of this donation came after the United Nations launched a second appeal for Pakistan on Friday. The new revised appeal amounts to $2.07 billion in total.
"Britain was the first country to come to the support of Pakistan in scale after the flooding started and we will continue to stand by Pakistan in its hour of need as this situation develops," Mitchell told reporters at a high-level ministerial meeting on flood relief for Pakistan.
This new donation by Britain will be spent on preventing the spread of waterborne diseases, helping get children back into school post-disaster, and replacing livestock and poultry to help ensure food security, Mitchell said.
Valerie Amos, the UN under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator, expressed thanks to Britain and other nations that have pledged donations to the revised appeal; Kazinform cites China Daily.
