Brazil promises sustainable, accessible, secure Rio+20 conference
The sustainability initiatives for the meeting will feature waste sorting and biofuel generators, and exposition on several countries' successful initiatives in sustainable development will also be held, said Laudemar Aguiar, national secretary of the Brazilian government's Organization Committee for Rio+20.
Rio+20 will be "the most digitalized and secure conference ever held in Brazil," Aguiar said in Rio's convention center Riocentro, where the conference will be held.
Subtitles, simultaneous sign language translation and information in Braille will be provided. Adjustments have also been made to ensure mobility of disabled participants.
"If Rio+20 is to be an inclusive and participatory conference, we cannot, for the lack of proper equipment, exclude disabled people," Aguiar said.
Brazil will deploy 15,000 security forces for the summit and Rio's 550 traffic cameras will be used to monitor the security situation.
The Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development will be held in Brazil on June 20-22. A total of 176 countries will send delegations to the meeting. Heads of State and Government of 102 countries have already confirmed their presence.
