Dortmund police said there was no danger to the public after they defused the bombs in a car park just a few hundred yards from Signal Iduna Park.

Police confirmed they have arrested a suspect who planted the explosives and also tried to blackmail a local business. The bomb plot was not a terror or an Islamic plot, they said.

A statement on the league leaders' website said: "To ensure that our fans have a safe visit to Saturday's game, BVB (the club) will, as a precautionary measure, further increase security around the Signal Iduna Park in consultation with the police."

Dortmund are currently seven points clear at the top of the league table with just seven games remaining.

Reuters.com reported that Germany's Federal Crime Office (BKA) had detained the suspect in Cologne and had also found three explosive devices when searching his home.

They quoted a spokesman for Berlin's Interior Ministry saying: "There is no indication of any links to terror or Islamic organizations.

"The suspect was apparently acting on his own with a criminal motivation. There was no danger to any third parties at any time."

The BKA said they launched an investigation in February after the German embassy in Islamabad received a tip off via email offering to detail information about planned attacks; Kazinform cites www.edition.cnn.com .
