At least 12 killed, 39 injured in Egypt's road accident

CAIRO. March 31. KAZINFORM. At least 12 people were killed and 39 others injured when a bus overturned in Egypt's southern Sinai on Tuesday, the state MENA news agency reported.
The accident occurred on the Nakhl-Naqb road, some 80 km from the town of Nakhl, said the report.
Initial report said high speed caused the overturn of the bus, which carrying workers from the Upper Egyptian Governorate of Assiut to Nuweiba Port en route to Jordan.
The injured have been rushed to hospitals in nearby cities for treatment and the traffic resumed to normal, said the report.
Due to reckless driving and poor maintenance of vehicles, traffic accidents are common in Egypt with an estimated annual death toll of some 6,000 people.
The Egyptian traffic authorities implemented a new traffic code with tougher punishment for lawbreakers as of Aug. 1 last year, in a bid to reduce road accidents; Kazinform has learnt from Xinhua.
