Astana to hold regional conference on death penalty abolition

ASTANA. April 25. KAZINFORM /Kanat Kulshmanov/ A regional conference entitled From moratorium to abolition of death penalty in Central Asia: Challenges of the transition period will be held on April 28 in the Kazakh Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the support of the European Union.
The conference will focus on the process of abolition of capital punishment and the ways of solution of the challenges which occur in the region's countries after the introduction of life imprisonment.
Representatives of the Constitutional Control bodies, the Ministry of Justice, court system, prosecutor's office, NGOs, academic circles of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, representatives of the international organizations and diplomatic corps were invited to the conference.
The event is organized by the Representative office of Penal Reform International in Central Asia together with the Kazakh MFA, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Embassy of the Netherlands in Kazakhstan.
