Astana residents to celebrate Olympic Day with a race

ASTANA. KAZINFORM - Astana residents and guests of the Kazakh capital will be able to contend in a race with well-known athletes - Olga Shishigina and Yuri Melnichenko, according to chairman of the Astana branch of the National Olympic Committee Kuandyk Yelzhanov.

"On September 6, the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Culture and Sports, as well as the Astana Department of Tourism, Physical Culture and Sports will celebrate the Olympic Day under the aegis of the International Olympic Committee. The event will be held in the cities of Astana and Almaty as well as in all regional centers of Kazakhstan," Mr. Yelzhanov told the Thursday press briefing. According to him, people of different ages are to contend in a number of races. "Students of universities, representatives of ministries and agencies, military and law enforcement agencies, parliamentarians, foreign diplomats, well-known Olympic champions Olga Shishigina and Yuri Melnichenko and winners of various international championships will take part in the race as well," he concluded. The winners will be awarded with certificates signed up by Thomas Bach, the President of the International Olympic Committee.

Grand opening of the Olympic Day will be held on September 6 at 10:00 a.m. at the central park in Astana.
