Astana mayor meets with Mayors for Peace organization Secretary General

ASTANA. KAZINFORM - Today, Astana mayor Imangali Tasmagambetov has met with Yasuyoshi Komizo, the Secretary General of Mayors for Peace, an international organization of cities promoting peace.
"I am glad to welcome you in Astana. Your organization promotes the idea of a nuclear-weapon-free world. As you may know, Kazakhstan has been committed to the ideas of nuclear-free world since the first days of its independence. In fact, Kazakhstan was one of the first post-Soviet countries to renounce its nuclear arsenal," mayor Tasmagambetov said during the meeting. Mayors for Peace organization basically consists of cities that support the initiative established in 1982 by then mayor of Hiroshima Takeshi Araki. Astana joined the organization in August 2012 and became its 110th member. The organization also counts Almaty, Ayagoz, Karaganda, Kurchatov, Pavlodar, Ridder, Semey and other cities of Kazakhstan among its members.
