Astana hosts conference on death penalty abolition in Central Asia

ASTANA. April 26. KAZINFORM /Askar Bimendin/ A regional conference "From the moratorium to abolition of death penalty in Central Asia: challenges of transition period" is held in the Kazakh Ministry of Foreign Affairs with support of the European Union.
The main issue for discussion will be the abolition of capital punishment in Kazakhstan and Tajikistan.
Additionally, the attendees will discuss problematic aspects concerning the conditions of detention of those sentenced to death.
As Madina Dzharbussynova, Kazakh MFA's special envoy noted, the conference is expected to provide a platform for effective experience exchange in the process of the humanization of the penitentiary system.
"Besides, the conference will serve to strengthen cooperation among government agencies, civil society and international organizations seeking the necessary decisions to reform the institution of criminal punishment," she emphasized.
