69 books of the world modern literature to be translated into Kazakh

On November 15 online voting completed on a website www.100kitap.kz for determination of topical works of the modern literature recommended for translation into Kazakh. On November 19 the expert council of the contest approved the final list of books for translation. “The Lord of the Rings”, “The Green Mile”, “The Catcher in the Rye” are among the leaders of the rating.

“At first the working group of the project formed a list of 492 books; we chose the books for a reason based on prestige literary prizes such as Nobel prize in literature, Booker prize and others, and the winners of these prizes over the past 60 years, i.e. since 1950; we included them in a preliminary list and published it on a special resource. On November 15 the first contest stage completed, and we formed a preliminary list of 100 books in 8 categories; on the second stage a special expert council was created including representatives of culture, art and literature. This list was sent for approval to our experts, and as a result 69 books were approved, 3 books were recommended for exclusion, and other 28 books provoked disputes”, - the chairman of PF “Center for analysis and forecasting “C.A.P.” Oleg Sek noted at the press conference.

Let us recall that in his annual Letter to the people of Kazakhstan d.d. December 14, 2012, the Head of the State N. A. Nazarbayev announced a pioneer idea - to make a list of at least 100 modern books written in the modern language and to translate them into Kazakh in a modern way. This will allow enriching significantly and promoting Kazakh language amongst numerous Kazakhstani readers.
