6.4-magnitude earthquake hits central-north Chile

SANTIAGO. January 31. KAZINFORM An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale hit central-northern Chile Wednesday, according to the University of Chile's Seismological Service. No casualties were reported yet.

The jolt occurred at 1715 local time (2015 GMT) and its epicenter was located at 77 kilometers northwest of Vallenar, some 670 kilometers north of Santiago.

The earthquake was felt from the northern city of La Serena to southern city of Curico.

"No damages or victims were reported and no disturbances to the basic services or infrastructures were caused by this earthquake," said Chile's National Emergency Office (Onemi).

Onemi indicated the earthquake reached 4 degrees in Mercalli scale in the cities of Tierra Amarilla and Vallenar.

The United States Geological Service (USGS) earlier put the magnitude at 6.7.
