6.2-magnitude quakes hit Indonesian island
Reports from the area said the quake occurred 55 km (33 miles) southeast of Kendari, the island's capital, and probably struck the tip of the island.
Officials said the tremor was strongly felt in Kendari and two aftershocks measuring 5.2 and 6.2 were recorded soon after in the same region.
No tsumani warning was issued and there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
"It will be felt strongly there but it won't be devastating," said Rahmat Triyono, an official at Indonesia's meteorology agency.
"Looking at the map, the epicentre is inland, but just at the tip, and there are several small islands there, so it will be felt there, too."
The United States Geological Survey said the quake occurred at 2307 GMT, 67 miles east of Baubau at a relatively shallow depth of 6.2 miles (10 km). It later adjusted the depth to 5.8 miles.
