1,176 confirmed dead in Pakistan's worst floods: official

ISLAMABAD. August 9. KAZINFORM At least 1,176 persons have lost their lives and 4,717 have been injured so far in Pakistan's worst- ever floods in 80 years, a Federal Flood Commission official said Monday, Kazinform refers to Xinhua.

"The figures we released were compiled after receiving proper data from the provincial governments of the affected areas," Ayaz Tanvir, deputy director of the commission, told Xinhua.

"You may say this is the minimum loss and figures may be higher, " Tanvir said.

Earlier media reports suggest that over 1,600 people were killed due to the torrential rains and floods across the country, hitting almost all provinces of Pakistan.

According to a flood commission report, as many as 274,377 houses have been destroyed or partially damaged and 2,958,665 persons have been affected across the country by the flash floods.

Minimum 1,876,771 acres of cropped and 2,523,665 acres areas have also been affected due to floods and rains, the report said.

The commission said that at least 90,618 houses have been destroyed or damaged in Punjab province, 156,934 houses in Khyber- Pakhtunkhwa (KP), 19,619 in Balochistan, 1,389 in Federally Administered Tribal Areas, 2,336 in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and 3, 454 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir so far, totaling 2,74,350.

The floods also affected 4,717 villages in various parts including 1,472 in Punjab, 468 in KP, 2,584 in Balochistan and 193 in GB, the official said.
