Waste disposal site may have dumped formaldehyde precursor into river

TOKYO. May 25.  KAZINFORM An industrial waste disposal facility in Gunma Prefecture emptying a precursor chemical into a river may have led to formaldehyde levels exceeding permitted limits at some water filtration plants in the Kanto region late last week, the Saitama prefectural government said Friday.

It is highly possible that the waste disposal facility in question, which had been asked by a company in Saitama Prefecture to dispose of hexamethylenetetramine, the formaldehyde precursor, emptied the substance into a branch river in the upstream of the Tone River, according to the local government, Kyodo reports.

The Gunma facility told the local government the client company from Saitama failed to disclose that the chemical was a formaldehyde precursor, the local government said.
