Vancouver Lapu Lapu festival: Nine killed as car rams into crowd

At least nine people have been killed and multiple others were injured in Vancouver, the capital of the western Canadian province of British Columbia, after a car drove into a crowd at a Filipino street festival, according to the police, Al Jazeera reports.

The driver has been taken into custody and his identity is yet to be made public. Police say they are “confident” the incident was “not an act of terrorism”.

The incident happened shortly after 8pm (03:00 GMT) near East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street, a day before Canada votes in general elections. People had gathered for the festival known as Lapu Lapu Day.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on X: “I am devastated to hear about the horrific events at the Lapu Lapu festival in Vancouver earlier this evening.” British Columbia Premier David Eby said he was “shocked & heartbroken” by the news in a post on X.
