"I think our focus now will be on continuing to work with countries in the region, allies and partners of the United States who join us in wanting to send a strong message to the Assad regime and to tighten the noose economically and politically," US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told a regular briefing on Thursday.

Asked whether the United States is working to make Russia and China re-think, Nuland said: "In diplomacy, avenues are rarely closed... but at the moment our efforts are focused elsewhere."
