URGENT: Majilis elections cancelled in Zhanaozen - CEC
ASTANA. January 6. KAZINFORM /Askar Bimendin/ Central Election Commission of Kazakhstan adopted a resolution on the basis of the Constitutional Council's clarifications to cancel early elections to Majilis in Zhanaozen town and reschedule the elections to maslikhats until the end of the state of emergency in Zhanaozen.
"Earlier we have declared that the elections would be held in Zhanaozen on January 15, since, according to the Presidential Decree, a state of emergency was introduced for a period until 5 January 2012. This allowed us to organize and hold elections on time, and the parties and candidates were given the opportunity to make major campaign events in the period from 5 to 13 January. However, due to the extension of the state of emergency, we have applied for clarification of the features of the electoral legislation in a state of emergency to the Constitutional Council," CEC Chairman Kuandyk Turgankulov commented on the resolution.
