UNOHCHR representative visits Kazakhstan

ASTANA. KAZINFORM - Deputy Chairman of the People's Assembly of the Republic of Kazakhstan Yeraly Tugzhanov has met today with Deputy Regional Representative of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNOHCHR) Elisabeth de Costa in Astana, the assembly's press service reports.

Kazakhstani MP Yegor Kappel also attended the meeting that was held at the Palace of Peace and Accord. Y. Tugzhanov briefed Ms de Costa on the history, constitutional status, and goals of the People's Assembly of Kazakhstan. Utmost attention was paid to its role in strengthening of inter-ethnic tolerance and public consent in Kazakhstan. Elisabeth de Costa, in turn, talked about the EU funded project on Human rights protection for stability in Central Asia. During the meeting, the sides stressed the role of President Nursultan Nazarbayev in ensuring inter-ethnic peace and consent in the country. Mr. Tugzhanov also added that 2015 had been announced the year of the People's Assembly of Kazakhstan and invited Ms de Costa to participate in the 22nd jubilee session of the assembly.
