UN Secretary-General noted the selflessness of Kazakhs who fought for the world without nuclear weapons

ASTANA. KAZINFORM - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon issued a statement on the occasion of the International Day against Nuclear Tests.

International Day against Nuclear Tests is celebrated on August 29 on the initiative of President Nursultan Nazarbayev. On the same day in 1949 the Soviet Union carried out the first test of the nuclear weapon which was followed with 455 more nuclear tests in the next decades that had awful impact on local population and environment. As noted by the UN Secretary General, the tests and the followed hundreds of others in other countries became distinctive feature of nuclear race of arms at which the survival of people depended on the doctrine of the mutual assured destruction known as MAD. "As the Secretary General, I had opportunities to meet some brave people who survived after use of the nuclear weapon and nuclear tests in Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Semipalatinsk. Their determination and dedication must continue to serve as the management in our work on creation of the world without nuclear weapon", noted Ban Ki-moon in the statement. UN Secretary-General proposed that the International Day against Nuclear Tests to reassess the history of these survivors. In addition, the head of the organization addressed to citizens of eight remaining Annex 2 States whose ratification is needed for entry into force: China, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Egypt, India, Iran, Israel, Pakistan and the United States.
