UN Human Rights Chief concerned over Urumqi riots

NEW-YORK.  July 8. KAZINFORM  /Aliya Altyngazina/ The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Pillay expressed deep concern over the death of people in riots in Urumqi, the capital of China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and called to conduct transparent and independent investigation, Kazinform reports citing the UN Sec General's press service.

Navanethem Pillay considers the civic leaders of ethnic communities and China's authorities should exercise great restraint to prevent further violence. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights drew the attention to the growth of tension in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China. She urged China to treat the arrested people properly and observe all legal procedures in compliance with the Chinese legislation and international law.

In N. Pillay's opinion, the independent investigation is of paramount importance for creating atmosphere of trust in society.
