Ukraine to seek UN Security Council membership for 2016-2017
NEW YORK. September 24. KAZINFORM Ukraine will seek non-permanent UN Security Council membership for 2016-2017, President Viktor Yushchenko said at the 64th session of the UN General Assembly, Kazinform refers to RIA Novosti.
The UN Security Council comprises five permanent veto-wielding members - Russia, the United States, China, France and Britain. The other 10 members are elected on the regional basis by the General Assembly for two-year terms.
"Today I am honored to confirm Ukraine's determination to become a Security Council member in 2016-2017," he said.
The Ukrainian president called on the permanent Security Council members to "enhance security guarantees for countries with non-nuclear status, especially those who abandoned nuclear weapons or their development."
He also welcomed steps made by Russia and the United States towards a new strategic arms reduction treaty .
