UCLA reports record number of prospective freshmen
LOS ANGELES. April 19. KAZINFORM The University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) said Monday 15,560 students have been offered admission for its 2011 fall freshman class, representing the highest number of prospective freshmen in the university's history. Kazinform refers to Xinhua.
The freshmen were chosen from a record 61,515 applicants, and about a third of them are expected to enroll by the May 1 deadline, it said.
Among the admitted freshmen, 44.9 percent are Asians/Asian Americans, followed by whites/Caucasians (32.1 percent), Latinos/Chicanos (15.5 percent), and African Americans (3.4 percent). The class will also include a larger number of non-resident students.
The prospective freshmen have an average GPA of 4.3 and SAT composite score of 2,039.3 (out of a possible 2,400). Six of them are young inventors who have patented inventions. Many are poets and writers, as the applicants are outstanding in their backgrounds and academic, artistic, athletic, scientific and civic developments, UCLA said.
Across the UC system, 10.7 percent of those offered admission are from outside California, compared to 8.7 percent last year and 7.6 percent the year before. International students make up 7.4 percent of the group, up from 5.3 percent last year and 4 percent in 2009.
Non-California residents pay roughly 34,500 U.S. dollars in tuition, while residents pay about 11,600 dollars. More than 10,000 of the admitted students have already been notified that they are eligible for financial aid, according to the university. Kazinform cites Xinhua.
