U.S. jobless claims rise by 35,000
WASHINGTON. January 14. KAZINFORM The number of people applying for unemployment aid last week climbed to the highest level since late October, the U.S. Labor Department reported Thursday; Kazinform refers to Xinhua.
The Labor Department said that the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims for jobless benefits was 445,000 in the week ending Jan. 8, an increase of 35,000 from the prior week's revised figure of 411,000.
The applications fell during this winter holiday season. Once the holiday season ends, though, applications usually rise in early January.
The four-week moving average, which more closely watched claims figures, increased to 416,500 from the previous week's revised average of 411,000; Kazinform cites Xinhua.
