U.N. panel urges 40%-70% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050

BERLIN. KAZINFORM A U.N. panel on climate change on Sunday urged a 40 percent-70 percent cut in greenhouse gas emissions from the 2010 level by 2050 to achieve an international goal of keeping the global temperature rise below 2 C from preindustrial levels.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warned in a report adopted after a weeklong session of its third working group in Berlin that the emissions must be reduced to zero or "below" -- meaning through carbon capture -- by the end of this century to maintain the temperature rise cap set in U.N. climate talks, Kyodo reports. The goal could be achieved if the carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere is kept below 450 parts per million by 2100, the report said.
