The training was held within the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ombudsman's Office of Kazakhstan, the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Kazakhstan and Penal Reform International in Central Asia.

The goal of the training was to develop a kit for monitoring child rights in state-run institutions for children and capacity building of the staff of the Ombudsman's Office as well as of the NGOs.

As part of the training course, the participants visited an orphanage in the town of Shuchinsk and the children's summer camp of the Sandyktau orphanage (both in Akmola Region), where they tested child rights monitoring kits for state-run institutions for children.

Jaap Doek, the former chairman of the UN Committee for Child Rights, and Nevena Vuckovic-Šahovic, the vice-chairwoman of the Executive Council of the International Human Rights Service (Geneva), conducted the training.

It is expected that with the help of the organizers of the training the participants will share their knowledge with other NGOs on monitoring child rights in state-run closed institutions for children in their respective regions.
