Traffic to be banned on 52 roads in event of major Tokyo quake

TOKYO. March 8. KAZINFORM Japan's National Police Agency on Thursday unveiled a plan to ban road traffic on a total of 52 expressway and conventional highway routes in the event of a major earthquake with a magnitude of around 7 striking the country's capital and its vicinity.

According to Kyodo, to secure passage for vehicles operated by police forces, fire departments and the Self-Defense Forces as well as those carrying relief goods or personnel, controls on road traffic will cover up to 11 prefectures including Tokyo.

The 10 other prefectures are Ibaraki, Tochigi, Gunma, Saitama, Chiba, Kanagawa, Yamanashi, Nagano, Shizuoka and Aichi.
