Three giant dinosaur found in Australia
BEIJING. July 7. KAZINFORM Scientists in Australia have discovered fossils of three new dinosaur species, including a carnivore, in Queensland near Winton, Kazinform cites Xinhuanet.
The giant meat-eater theropod and two herbivorous sauropods date back to the mid-Cretaceous period, 98 million years ago.
The specimen of dinosaurs was found as part of joint digs by Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum and Queensland Museum. The discovery of giant dinosaurs is the first of its kind since 1981.
"The carnivore, named Australovenator wintonensis and nicknamed 'Banjo', was light and agile," said Scott Hocknull, lead author of the dinosaur discovery. "He could run down most prey with ease over open ground. His most distinguishing feature was three large slashing claws on each hand. Unlike some theropods that have small arms -- think T rex -- Banjo was different; his arms were a primary weapon. He's Australia's answer to Velociraptor, but many times bigger and more terrifying", Kazinform refers to Xinhuanet.
