The Security Council adopts resolution on Ukraine proposed by U.S.
The draft resolution on Ukraine expresses grief over "the tragic loss of life throughout the Russian Federation-Ukraine conflict" and calls for "a swift end to the conflict," Kazinform News Agency reports, citing UN News.
The resolution, which "urges" for the establishment of "a lasting peace between Ukraine and the Russian Federation," was supported by ten countries, with no votes against and five abstentions. It became the first resolution on Ukraine adopted by the Security Council since the beginning of the conflict.
None of the amendments proposed by Security Council member states — three by European countries and two by Russia — were adopted. Some — due to a lack of votes, and one — due to a veto by a permanent member.
Earlier on Monday, the United States put the same resolution to a vote in the General Assembly. However, it was adopted there with amendments proposed by European countries.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced a new round of Russian-American talks on Ukraine. He said that the talks would take place in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh on February 25, a week after the first round, which took place in the same city.
