The EU, Kazakh National Medical University signed MoU

The Memorandum reflects the intention to establish long lasting relations in health education between the University and peer institutes from EU Member States and to update the curriculum by incorporating international best practices for the nurse education.

The goal of the project is to enhance the role and involvement of nurses in mitigating the further spread of HIV and Multidrug-resistant and Extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB/MXDR), the main threats of Kazakhstan public health, and to enhance the role and involvement of nurses in the prevention of blood born infections: HIV and hepatitis C at hospitals and other health facilities. Courses on these issues will be embedded in the curriculum and practicing nurses will be trained to work according to international best practices and guidelines, the press service of the EU Delegation to Kazakhstan.

The Project is having Steering Committee Meeting before the MoU undersigning and the SC members will attend the press-conference to answer questions of journalists to be held in KMNU. SC members are directors of National TB and AIDS centre, the School of Public Health Kazakhstan and SPC SEEM (RSES), the project partner appointed by Ministry of Health Kazakhstan. The international members of the Steering Group are from EU Delegation in Kazakhstan and the country directors of CDC CAR, WHO, UNICEF and the world's leading tuberculosis NGO KNCV TB.

Over the past few years, the Ministry of Health (MoH) and the Government of Kazakhstan have made important progress in meeting the challenge to treat TB and HIV/AIDS and the current project will contribute to the institutionalization of the international training and approaches that have been brought to the country until now. The project contributes to the health restructuring reforms such as the state program Salamatty Kazakhstan.

In this light, capacity building for the human resources in health care is needed to enable them to take up their new roles in the service delivery. Nurses are the bridge to client centred services and to improve the safety of providers and users of health services. Two practical manuals and courses for nurses will be developed by a working groups consisting of leading infection control experts and nurses, KNMU teachers, and practitioners from Primary Health Care, AIDS and TB centres, leading NGOs. The course will be incorporated in the KNMU undergraduate curriculum, what ensures that manual and course are will be embedded in the mainstream education for nurses.
