Tempus Information Day held in Almaty

ALMATY. October 18. KAZINFORM On 18 October a Tempus Information Day (ID)- discussion of cooperation opportunities with EU higher education institutions in the framework of Tempus programme was held in Almaty. The event's participants got familiarized with the application procedure of the Fifth Call for proposals in the framework of Tempus IV, national and regional priorities, as well as with Programme's recent and past activities in the country. They also received practical recommendations on project preparation.

The event was organized by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan; European Union's Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA), Brussels; Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Kazakhstan; TEMPUS National Office in Kazakhstan, the press service of the EU Delegation to Kazakhstan said. Among the attendees were representatives of higher education institutions, line ministries and agencies, Embassies of EU Member States and international organisations working in the field of education.

Tempus is the EU-funded programme that supports the modernisation of higher education in the EU's neighbouring countries. The Programme contributes to cooperation in higher education between the European Union and the partner countries, assisting in modernization and integration of higher education systems in partner countries by financing joint projects with participation of European universities. Tempus finances projects through regular Calls for proposals published on the website http://eacea.ec.europa.eu/tempus.

In Kazakhstan the Tempus programme was launched in 1994, with the first projects starting in 1995. The overall number of projects funded during the period - 59, including 23 national and 36 multi-country ones. The total amount allocated by the European Union for projects involving Kazakhstani universities during 15 years (1995-2011) made up over 37 million Euros. In cooperation with EU member states partners new curricula and structures in the field of university governance, water resources management, space and information and communication technologies, geo-informatics, renewable energy technologies, railway transport, hotel business, education quality enhancement and accreditation, strengthening links with industry and science, promotion of Bologna process, students' self-governance are being developed in cooperation with EU member states universities. Among the most active universities are: Eurasian national Gumilev university (7 projects), Kazakh national Al-Farabi university (6), Kazakh national Satpaev technical university (6), Karaganda state university named after Buketov (5), Kokshetau state university named after Sh. Ualikhaniv (4), Karaganda state technical university (4).
